Gift giving evolved in a Christmas art form all on it's own. How many hours have you spend looking for the perfect gift for someone, not even mentioning the hours pondered over it and the financial costs involved. The busy malls, long ques and kids becoming irritated and bored. (I think this applies to some spouses too...) So what do I love about gifts then?
I love the fact that a gift is a two-way thing: The Gift of Giving and the Gift of Receiving. Yes, receiving is a gift all on it's own. Whether it's a birthday gift, Christmas gift or "just a little something" it makes you feel special. But in these cases it is something you expect. What about when a friend gives you a food parcel because they've noticed you do not have food in your cupboards? It's still the Gift of Giving, but are you practicing the Gift of Receiving or is Pride or Shame taking the place of Gods Gifts?
Isaiah 9:6 "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
Jesus Christ, our Messiah, is our Gift from our Heavenly Fathers loving heart. Because He loves you so much, he gave you His only Son. What bigger gift of Love can you think of? Someone who willingly gave His life and went to hell for 3 days so YOU might live eternally? I have yet to find someone who could give me an answer...
But the following applies: the Gift of Receiving. What would be the point that Jesus was given to save you, but you do not receive Him as a gift? And yet, people don't. They worship and pray to God, know about Jesus, but still have not received Him as their Gift from God. It is my prayer that the Gift of Receiving will take flame in their hearts and the importance of our greatest Gift be set in stone.
May you enjoy the Gift of Giving and the Gift of Receiving this Christmas. Remember the reason for the season and GIVE Glory to God.
