When we celebrate events in life, we invite loved ones, we often buy gifts, we cook, we bake, we charge the camera’s batteries and make sure we have enough memory to capture every single moment of that day…we basically go all out to make it a day of remembrance. And then years after the event, we will look at the photos, and remember it with great joy. We will relive the moment, and talk and laugh about it again. “This day shall be for you a memorial day, and you shall keep it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations, as a statute forever, you shall keep it as a feast.” – Exodus 12:14
To celebrate is to give honour to God. God wants us to remember certain events, and to repeat the celebration year after year. Repetition is of vital importance in the learning process. The process of understanding the value of the ransom price paid, and the process of learning how a true relationship can change our lives. But also gaining an understanding of how great the sacrifice was, not to make us feel guilty, but to remind us of His great and unconditional love for us. In Leviticus all the laws given to Israel are repeated. But these laws was but a shadow of the things to come…
“The old system under the Law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves.” – Hebrews 10:1a (New Living Translation)
Do you believe that Jesus was truly born on the 25th of December, just over 2000 years ago? There has been a lot of debate about the date, as well as the time of year. So in conclusion, the date is definitely wrong. But do you believe that Jesus was born? Do you believe that our Redeemer sent His only Son to come and die in your place? And do you celebrate His birth every year? “For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world, that He even gave His One and only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him as Saviour shall not perish, but have eternal life.” – John 3:16 (Amplified)
The date in all practicality is really not that important. What is important, is that we remember that Jesus walked the earth. We need to remind ourselves that He was the beginning of the fulfillment of the prophecies. Part of the ‘good things’ promised to the Israelite's. He came to rescue us. He came to set us free. Free from bondage, free from the Law of Moses, to be able to enter into a new covenant. A covenant of hope, a covenant of love, a promise of an eternity with the Lover of my soul. Time without end with my Father in Heaven. And therefore, it is important to celebrate the birth of Jesus!
So invite loved ones, buy gifts, cook, and bake, charge the camera’s batteries and make sure that you have enough memory to capture every single moment of Christmas 2015. Go all out, and make a big deal of Christmas this year.
Make it a feast of remembrance, in memory of the birth of our Saviour!
May you all have a joyous Christmas.
