Winter is traditionally a very dead and lifeless season, a season that most people really don’t like, and a season that people can’t wait for to pass. But in the Namaqualand the exact opposite happens during the Winter season. In that part of South Africa Winter is a season of beauty, a season of non-stop attractiveness, and a booming tourism season. People from far and wide leave their comfy homes behind to come and tour this arid desert, to breath in the endless stretches of flower fields in all their splendor.
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is Yours, O Lord, and this is Your Kingdom. We adore You as the One who is over all things.” – 1 Chronicles 29:11
The strange thing, is that the Namaqualand gives more of an impression of wasteland during the warmer Summer period. All the plants look like normal ‘lifeless’ succulents, and the region looks like a dry wilderness. But underneath all of this, is the hidden treasure of nature! While it looks like nothing to the human eye, God is calmly preparing all the succulents for Winter, when their own season of overwhelming magnificence will start!
“One generation shall praise Your works to another, And shall declare Your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of Your majesty And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.” – Psalm 145:5
Overwhelmed by the beauty of the surroundings, I can’t help but to reflect on us as humans. We need to learn to stay calm and to relax in the Winter season of our own lives. We need to open our eyes for what is good and beautiful in the eyes of our Creator, and not for what is acceptable to the world. We need to believe that God is always in control, and that He is probably preparing us for a season filled with endless beauty, if we will just allow Him. Stay on your knees and pray about situations, instead of discussing it with people who can’t change it for you. And remember, if the Namaqua landscape can change from a semi desert into a panorama of gorgeousness year after year, our Lord Almighty can do even more in your life!
