Have you ever wondered what the tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) looked like? Although I know it was impossible for the people back then to have built something as picturesque and magnificent as the skyscrapers in Dubai, I do like the idea of thinking that they might have inspired the Dubai architects! But apart from the fact that they wanted to build something much bigger than what they needed, they wanted to do this all for their own glory. So can you imagine God’s disappointment? He already had to make a decision about the sinful nature of the people in Noah’s time, and He promised to never destroy everyone again. So He decided to bring division, by going down to the people (through His Spirit) and confusing their speech.
Language is not a barrier of communication, but a tool to reach and teach. ~Iriza Eichorn
I’m sure the language confusion created absolute chaos on earth! The one day everybody laughed together, built the tower together, and talked about the progress of their project; and the next day nobody understood each other. And that while they were busy with an engineering wonder, building the highest tower anyone has ever seen. A tower that every citizen was excited about, and a project that everyone was waiting in anticipation to see the end result of. The problem is, they wanted to marvel at this tower, just to give themselves credit. They believed that they were bigger than God, and that they could accomplish everything on their own. Maybe they even wanted to impress God with their brilliance?

“Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. So the Lord scattered them abroad from that place upon the face of the whole earth, and they gave up building the city.” ~Genesis 11:7-8 (Amplified) One can now think, that after the confusion in the City of Babel, that God divided Himself as well. Because how would the people learn about Him if they didn’t understand each other? But God is always in control, and He never does something just to sit and wonder afterwards how to fix it (that is more like us, isn’t it?). All through the Old Testament we read how God revealed Himself to the prophets, and how certain key people preached the Gospel to the peoples. So although not |
everyone spoke the same language, God never allowed speech to become a barrier. And the New Testament starts with the fulfilling of all the Old Testament promises. God worked with a plan all along, and not just the plan of our redemption, but also a plan to come and restore the language barrier.
“And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different / foreign languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression (in each tongue in appropriate words).” ~Acts 2:4 (Amplified)
The day that you decide to lay down your own life and start following Jesus, the Holy Spirit will come and fill you. And although you will probably not immediately be able to speak in tongues, just know that your spirit already made a connection with God’s Spirit. And in this we find the restoration of the language barrier, in knowing that we will receive the Holy Spirit to be able to give and interpret God’s truths, as well as the gift of speaking in tongues (this is spirit to Spirit communication).
“A time will come, however, indeed it is already here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for the Father is seeking just such people as these as His worshipers. God is a Spirit (Spiritual Being) and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.” ~John 4:23-24 (Amplified)
The impossible thus becomes possible when you receive the Holy Spirit. All of a sudden you are able to convey a message you could never do before, or even interpret a situation with wisdom that will amaze everyone around you. Why? Because nothing on this earth will ever be able to silence God’s voice. And even though there are how many different languages and cultures on earth after Babel, there is no need for us to create language barriers. We should rather learn to appreciate all the different cultures and enjoy the beauty of each language, and embrace the opportunity to learn more of our multidimensional God by spending time with people that is different than us.
Seek God in spirit, NOT in flesh!
