“The gods of all other nations are only idols, but the Lord created the heavens.” – 1 Chronicles 16:26
If you look up the definition of an idol, you will see that it is described as a picture or object that is worshipped like a god, a false god, a cultural icon or an especially popular person. A great illustration of this, is the golden calf statue that Aaron made for the Israelites. And if you look at the world around you, it is not difficult to see how people ‘worship’ all sorts of man-made idols. In modern times we can look at Hollywood – the word can almost be used as an ice breaker, because the moment you say it anyone can join in the conversation, and confidently exchange facts. Unfortunately a lot of times if you mention God, people become rather uncomfortable and unsure of how to handle the situation. How difficult is it for you to talk to someone else about your religious views and your relationship with God, compared to a conversation of worldly interest?
Prayer: Dear Father, You are the Creator of heaven and earth, the only one deserving of praise! Please help me on those days that the world swallows me with all its admirable desirability, to turn my focus back to You. Because in Your presence I find joy, and with You I experience the meaning of glory and majesty. Amen
