“Your pride has deceived you. Your capital is a fortress of solid rock; your home is high in the mountains, and so you say to yourself, ‘Who can ever pull me down?’ Even though you make your home as high as an eagle’s nest, so that it seems to be among the stars, yet I will pull you down.” – Obadiah 1:3-4
There is something about heights! Some people want to bungee and skydive, while others are terrified by heights. We also refer to the highs and lows of life. When Jesus went into the desert, the devil took Him to the highest point of the mountain showing Him all the kingdoms of the world, trying to tempt Him (Matthew 4:8), in the Old Testament we learn about the High Priests, and in Psalms David gives praise to the Lord, the most High (Psalm 7:17). And in today’s verse we read about pride and building a home as high as an eagle’s nest. If we remain focused on God, He will be the highest High in our lives. But if we live self-centered, we will deem ourselves superior to those around us and expect other people to look up to us, and that is exactly what God is warning us against today!
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me today to not block my own view and expect gratification from the world. But to rather seek Your face, because You are the only one Who can really make me feel good about myself, and You are the only one Who can truly give me joy and enjoyment of the pleasures of this world. And though I sometimes find it so extremely difficult, please help me to live a life of entire satisfaction. Please feed my spirit, so that I will never experience the emptiness of this world, but only the riches of Your glory. Amen
