Smith Wigglesworth was born in 1859 to a very poor family. His father did manual labor, for very little pay. Smith himself went to work at the age of six to help with the family income. At six he was pulling turnips and at seven he was working in a woolen mill twelve hours a day. As a result of his circumstances he was unable to attend school, and ended up illiterate.
His parents did not know God, but Smith hungered in his heart to know Him. Even as a youngster he would pray in the fields. His grandmother was the critical Christian in his life. She was a Wesleyan Methodist and would take Smith to meetings with her. At one of these meetings there was a song being sung about Jesus as the lamb and Smith came into the realization of God's love for him, and his decision to believe Christ for his salvation was decided that day. He was immediately filled with the desire to evangelize, and led his own mother to Christ.*
Wigglesworth married Polly Featherstone at the age of 23, and she taught him how to read & write. He often said that the Bible was the only book he ever studied. One of his famous quotes read as follow: ‘Great faith is a product of great fights. Great testimonies are the outcome of great tests. Great triumphs can only come out of great trials.’
Smith Wigglesworth wrote this, because he was familiar with hardships. He knew what poverty felt like, and yet he worked hard without knowing what the end result would be. He knew what is was to labor hours at end just for survival, yet he continued to believe in the faithfulness of God. And as a young adult he almost gave up on his dream of becoming an evangelist, but his devoted wife reminded him of God’s love and promises. He faced more than one difficulty in life, but with great faith he managed to overcome every obstacle he ever faced! And today Christians around the world remembers him as a powerful missionary, a man of God who believed boldly in our Father’s ability to heal the sick, and a fearful servant of the Lord Almighty who raised at least 14 people from the dead!
We live in a broken world, and every one of us will face some kind of trial somewhere in life. None of us are immune to worldly problems. The question is, how do you handle your worries, suffering, burdens and difficulties? Do you try to solve it all by yourself, or do you take it to God believing that He knows best? “For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.” – Psalm 18:39
What does your faith look like? Do you wake up every morning prepared for whatever might come your way? Or do you perhaps feel like you are drowning in your circumstances at the moment? Remember the promise in Isaiah 40:29 whenever you feel that your warrior boots are worn out, “He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and making it to abound]!”
Let your faith be bigger than your fear. God has your back!
Blessings
