God knows when He sees potential…and Jesus saw potential in Peter! He saw something in this fisherman that very few other people could see. But He did not look at Peter in the flesh, He saw what he could become in spirit! Because if Jesus only looked at the outer person, He would have only seen a dirty, sweaty, smelly man who works with fish the whole day. A man who leaves the shore early in the morning to go and sit in his boat until late afternoon, hoping to catch something. And who returns in the afternoon sometimes glad and sometimes sad. A man with normal emotions, and sometimes even impulsive and unstable emotions. But Jesus looked for willingness, not a well groomed personality!
“And Simon Peter and those who were with him followed Him.” ~Mark 1:36 As we journey through the first books of the New Testament, we get to learn more about Peter’s personality and the changes he had to undergo to grow spiritually. The starting point of his ministry is a rather strange one, as Jesus immediately changes his name to Cephus (Aramaic) or Peter (Greek), shortly after meeting him. God knows that it is sometimes necessary to change your identity to be able to change your future. And what a great future God planned for Peter! Jesus promised to make him a fisher of men. And because our faithful Father always gives in abundance more than what our human minds will ever be able to comprehend, Peter went from fisherman, to the cornerstone on which God built His church! |
“Whoever does not persevere and carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.” ~Luke 14:27
